Not long ago, Rufus Barma 'betrayed' the organization Pandora and assisted their enemy, the Baskervilles. He attacked the duchess Sheryl Rainsworth and stole the Rainsworth dukedom's 'key' to door to the Abyss, and later destroyed it. Destroying the 'key' also nulled the contracts with Chains made through the Rainsworth door - Sheryl Rainsworth's Owl, Sharon Rainsworth's Equus, and Xerxes Break's Mad Hatter - and those members of the Rainsworth household were rendered powerless, and captured by the Baskervilles.
As you decode the letters, you discover in their decades-old correspondence that, in a vow to never betray one another, Rufus and Sheryl exchanged their dukedoms' respective keys.
Reading this, you stop your pen for a moment, and pull out your incuse - the container for your contract made through the Barma dukedom's door - to find that it is empty.
In other words-
It was the contracts with the Barma household's Chains - Rufus' Dodo and your March Hare - which had been broken. Rufus Barma did not destroy the Rainsworths' key to the Abyss, but his own.
This meant that the Rainsworth household's contracts were intact. In that case, then the reason that they had been unable to use their Chains' powers had to be because Rufus used the real Rainsworth key to suppress them. And if Rufus was able to exert control over the Rainsworth Chains that way, then the key itself must not be bound to Sheryl Rainsworth's sole control.
Sharon and Xerxes are in danger - particularly Xerxes, who is especially hated by the Baskervilles. But if Xerxes regains Mad Hatter's powers, he should be able to handle things and defeat their captors.
You quickly return to the box brought by the pageboy to seek out the object the letters reveal to be the true Rainsworth key-
